What's in a name?

Iridium:
(n) A rare element. Silvery coloured. A transition metal belonging to the platinum group. Atomic number 77.  From the Latin iris meaning 'rainbow', 'iridium' means 'of rainbows'.  Iridium was discovered in Britain. Iridium was named after the Latin word for rainbow because its salts are highly coloured.   Iridium is linked with the significant change that occured to cause the demise of the dinosaurs. Iridium is common in asteroids and comets whilst rare on Earth except in the core.  Iridium is used in high strength alloys that can withstand high temperatures and is used in spark plugs.  Iridium is notable for being the most corrosion resistant element known.  Iridium is an excellent conductor of electricity.
