For example think about the beliefs of people who communicate with excellence outlined below:

The Map is not the Territory
When I look at situations I interpret what is going on by referring to my past experiences. That is, I have a mental or cognitive “map” of the world which I use to help me make decisions. I realise, however, that other people have different experiences, language, culture etc so, although we can look at the same thing, it can mean something else to them. As a result I don’t assume that my map must be a) right or b) the only one which is useful in a given situation. I take the time and trouble to make sure I understand other people’s “maps” so that I can be sure we are on the same wave length.

You Cannot Not Communicate
It is impossible for me to not communicate with people. The actual words I use only account for 7% of the overall meaning of my communication. I “leak out” so much more information via my body language, tone of voice, gestures etc. I am constantly communicating with people – when I walk into a room, sit in a meeting, meet people for the first time. What is my unconscious communication saying about me?

The Meaning of the Communication is the Response You Get
As an expert communicator I know that sometimes others will misunderstand the point I am trying to make. The message I intend to send will be different from the message that is interpreted. When this happens I take responsibility for this “faulty reception” and find another way to put my point across.

If What I’m Doing isn’t Working I Change What I’m Doing
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.
If I’m not getting the results I want, I face up to why that might be so and have the flexibility to try a different strategy until I get the response I want.
The Person with the Most Flexibility in Thinking and Behaviour has the Best Chance of Succeeding.
If I have flexibility in my thinking and behaviour I have choices available to me. If one choice doesn’t work I can try another until I succeed.
Food for thought??
